History of Goshen
Buick GMC Hyundai
During the winter of 1980, Showalter Buick GMC moved to a
new showroom built at its current 3220 Elkhart Road location. The dealership was then owned by the
late H. Dale Showalter, a well-respected local banker, who moved the business
from its Pike Street location in downtown Goshen.
Nine years
later, Mr. Showalter sold the dealership to two Detroit-area businessmen. Mr. Larry Malenowski and Mr. Dan Martin
operated the business until Mr. Martin purchased the dealership from his
partner and became the sole owner of Showalter Buick GMC in 1990.
In November
of 1999, the dealership again changed hands. With financing assistance from General Motors, Showalter
Buick GMC was purchased by Mr. Dzung Nguyen of Denver, Colorado. Out of respect for the Showalter family
and their well established and richly deserved local reputation, Mr. Nguyen
elected to retain the Showalter Buick GMC business moniker.
Freed of
his financial obligations to General Motors in 2006, Mr. Nguyen became the sole
owner of Showalter Buick GMC, purchased the property on which the company sits,
and began to aggressively expand the business.
In August
of 2006, Mr. Nguyen was awarded a franchise by Hyundai Motor America. The acquisition of the Hyundai brand
provided the Goshen market with its first new opportunity in over twenty years
to select from a line-up of import models of passenger cars, SUVs and family vans. In keeping with the company's changed
business model, Mr. Nguyen also elected to change the name of the
dealership. Goshen Buick GMC
Hyundai now reflects the company's operating philosophy, and Mr. Nguyen's
desire to be known as a Goshen-based business serving the local marketplace.
On December 15, 2006, at its Elkhart Road
location, Goshen Buick GMC Hyundai opened its new showroom and service facility
dedicated exclusively to the Hyundai line of family vehicles.
Under Mr.
Nguyen's leadership, Goshen Buick GMC Hyundai has received a number of the
highest customer satisfaction awards bestowed by General Motors. Included among these are:
•
Year
2000 Mark of Excellence Dealer Award
•
Ranked
#1 in Purchase Satisfaction Index and #2 in Service Satisfaction Index in 2003
•

•

•

•

Mr.
Nguyen's involvement with General Motors extends beyond his local sales and
service dealership, however. He is
one of the founders of the Mentor program with General Motors' Minority Dealer
Association (GMMDA). He is a
member of the Board of Directors of the GMMDA, and served as the Association's
Secretary in 2006. He continues to
serve as a mentor through the GMMDA, offering assistance and support to other
minority persons wanting to launch careers in the automobile industry.
In 2005,
Mr. Nguyen was nominated to the Board of Directors of the National Association
of Minority Automobile Dealers (NAMAD).
He was nominated again in 2007 to the board to serve an additional 2
years term.
Goshen
Buick GMC Hyundai's dramatic growth owes to Mr. Nguyen's work ethic, his commitment
to excellence, his pride in providing the highest quality products to his
customers, and his abiding philosophy that Goshen and its citizens are the
heart of his market. Mr. Nguyen invests
himself similarly in the Goshen community, where he has served as a member of
the Board of Directors of the Goshen Chamber of Commerce and its Economic
Development Committee. He is
serving the Goshen Chamber as its Chairman during 2007.
Mr. Nguyen
has been an active member of the Goshen Noon Kiwanis Club for a number of
years. He is also a long-time
member of the Board of Directors of the Boys & Girls Club of Goshen,
serving on both the Strategic Planning and Finance Committees. Mr. Nguyen developed, and as a
volunteer, continues to direct the Boys & Girls Club vehicle donation
program. Since launching the
donation program five years ago, Mr. Nguyen has generated in excess of $90,000
to support the programs and services available to children and youth at the
Club.
As a result
of Mr. Nguyen's commitment to, and involvement in the Goshen community, Goshen
Buick GMC Hyundai was presented with the Chamber's prestigious 2006
Community Service Award for Companies with 50 or Fewer Employees in recognition of his exceptional
community service.
